Incapsula, based in Redwood Shores, started in 2008 and currently has about 30 employees. It looks like their privately funded for now. They offer cloud based security services and website acceleration to small and medium size businesses, once the domain of larger enterprises.
The company was started by a seasoned team of veterans from the security space having worked for Imperva and RSA. These two companies are leaders in their respective markets. Thus, they bring significant experience in protecting against DDOS and Layer 7 application attacks.
Incapsula has deployed 13 POPs at the major Internet Exchanges including Amsterdam, LA, San Jose, Ashburn, Frankfurt, Singapore, Miami, Tokyo and London. Their global presence enables them to service a global customer base.
When you peel back the layers, they are a normal CDN with a WAF (web application firewall) offering. The CDN caches content close the end-user and the WAF protects against the OWASP Top 10 including SQL injections, cross-site scripting, broken authentication and session management.
Incapsula’s security offering is broader than all other CDN except Akamai. The more impressive part is that their network is PCI compliant. That’s quite an accomplishment for such a small company. Not even some of the larger cloud providers are PCI compliant. They have positioned themselves uniquely in the competitive CDN industry.
