Rise of European Pure-play CDN Startup

Categories

In Europe, the CDN ecosystem is healthy, diverse, increasing in number, and growing in sophistication. There are many different types of European CDN business models, including the following: 1) Large Telco CDNs: Telefonica and DT 2) Facilities based Long Haul Carrier with CDN offering: Hibernia Networks 3) Media focused CDN: Arkena 4) Established CDNs:  Streamzilla and Octoshape and 5) Pure-play CDNs: KeyCDN, CDNify and CDN77. KeyCDN recently launched in 2012, and currently has 17 POPs and growing. They are laser focused on increasing CDN market share in Europe and globally.

Two of the largest European pure-play CDN start-ups in Europe are CDNify and CDN77. Both have 20+ POPs, are 100% SSD powered, and offer all the standard CDN features for software downloads, gaming, video and small file delivery. Both are similar to MaxCDN, with easy-to-use interfaces, competitive pricing, global coverage, high performance networks, and most importantly, they have hundreds of paying customers.

CDNify was previously using OnApp for its CDN platform, but after a while, decided to go in a different direction, and build a global CDN from the scratch. This is the best scenario for any pure-play CDN, as it gives the CDN complete control of the software stack. Owning the software code enables the CDN to create features at will, which is hard to do with off the shelf CDN software. For now, CDNify and CDN77 are successful CDNs start-ups, that have proven themselves. They have a long road ahead of them, but if they get it right, the rewards will be huge.
